HOWTIAN’s VP of Market Strategy Tom Fuzer appeared on NutraIngredient’s NutraCast podcast to discuss the evolving role of energy drinks in today’s market.
In the episode, “All Grown Up: Energy Drinks Shift from Party Fuel to Day Fuel,” award-winning podcast host Danielle Masterson of NutraIngredients interviews Fuzer to explore how the category is moving beyond its roots in high-caffeine, high-sugar stimulation toward more balanced, functional beverages designed for everyday use.

A Category in Transition
For years, energy drinks were defined by immediacy—fast-acting, high-impact formulations built around caffeine and sugar. That model is now being reexamined as consumer behavior shifts.
As Fuzer explains in the episode, “People are looking for something they can drink every day—not just when they need a quick boost.” This shift reflects a broader change in how energy is perceived, with consumers placing greater value on consistency, drinkability, and overall experience.
Rather than occasional use tied to specific moments, energy drinks are increasingly becoming part of daily routines, supporting productivity, focus, and general wellness.
From Stimulation to Systems
A central theme of the discussion is the evolution from single-point stimulation to more integrated, system-based approaches to energy.
“The narrative has shifted from caffeine to systems,” Fuzer notes, highlighting the growing importance of how the body produces, utilizes, and recovers energy, not just how quickly it is delivered.
This shift is bringing renewed attention to ingredients that have long been part of energy formulations but have remained largely behind the scenes. Compounds such as Myo-inositol and D-glucuronolactone are now being reevaluated for their roles in supporting metabolic pathways and enabling more sustained, balanced energy delivery.
Implications for Formulators
As the category evolves, so too do the expectations placed on product developers. Today’s formulations must deliver more than intensity—they must deliver balance.
Consumers are increasingly seeking energy solutions that avoid the sharp peaks and crashes associated with traditional products, while still providing reliable performance. At the same time, there is growing demand for reduced-sugar systems and cleaner, more transparent ingredient profiles.
This creates a new formulation challenge: designing beverages that integrate functionality, taste, and daily usability into a single, cohesive system. As Fuzer emphasizes, “It’s no longer about stacking ingredients, it’s about how they work together.”
